1998 Grand Prix 3.8L- The other day my car started

Customer Question

1998 Grand Prix 3.8L- The other day my car started accelerating very slow through the gears while in drive. Reverse works fine every time, but when I drive forward the engine revs up to high rpm's. It feels like the transmission is having trouble catching gears. 10 seconds to hit 10mph. The lighter I tap the accelerator, the faster my car accelerates. I thought it might have been the catalytic converter, but after replacing it the problem still remains. My car is getting no error codes. No check engine light. Somebody please help

Hi, My name is ***** ***** for the delay.

I will do my best to assist you.

have you checked the transmission fluid level?

Expert:  Tim's Auto Repair replied 1 year ago.

is the color of the fluid good, red or does it smell and maybe a brownish color?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
It's red transmission fluid. Has about 25,000 miles on it and the filter. The oil level is full.
Expert:  Tim's Auto Repair replied 1 year ago.

ok.and reverse works fine?

the car only has 25ooo miles on it?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Why did you charge my credit card already? I haven't gotten any answers
Expert:  Tim's Auto Repair replied 1 year ago.

i dont have anything to do with charges,i am an independent mechanic

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
The transmission fluid has 25,000 miles on it.
Expert:  Tim's Auto Repair replied 1 year ago.

i see,,how many miles is on the car?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
233k
Expert:  Tim's Auto Repair replied 1 year ago.

ok,,so,,reverse works fine, but it is slipping in all forward gears,,correct?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Reverse works fine. Why is my car not accelerating normal in drive?
Expert:  Tim's Auto Repair replied 1 year ago.

the reason is ,the transmission is slipping.

from the way you explain the problem there is only one thing you can try from outside the transmission, that is to replace that transmission filter again..but

i really dont have any good thoughts on this transmission,i think the forward clutches are worn out and the transmission will need to be rebuilt or replaced,,sorry

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
That's your expert advice? Maybe try to fix the problem by replacing the transmission?
Expert:  Tim's Auto Repair replied 1 year ago.

no,my advice is to try a filter,a clogged filter could cause this,,

Expert:  Tim's Auto Repair replied 1 year ago.

understand,i rebuild automatic transmissions everyday..

if the filter doesnt fix it,i will think the forwad clutches are burnt out,,if this is the case, there is no easy button.

Expert:  Tim's Auto Repair replied 1 year ago.

and yes,the transmission would need to be rebuilt or replaced,,,there is nothing alse anyone could do from outside of the transmission to fix it if this is the case,,so,try a new filter

thanks

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Forward clutches sounds like something that makes sense.
Could you explain to me how a clogged filter could affect the car in drive, but not reverse
Expert:  Tim's Auto Repair replied 1 year ago.

the revears gear is lower and may take less pressure to hold,,

a clogged filter can restrict fluid and cause low pressure causing the pistons to not hold the clutches

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
Ok. You sound fairly certain that the problem could potentially be a clogged filter. I will service the transmission, and then get back to you
Expert:  Tim's Auto Repair replied 1 year ago.

no,,i am not at all certain of the filter,,i am saying that is the only hope you have..

Expert:  Tim's Auto Repair replied 1 year ago.

i think the transmission may be done,,and will need to be rebuilt

thanks

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
For a filter with 25,000 miles on it. What are the chances it's clogged. How common is it?
Expert:  Tim's Auto Repair replied 1 year ago.

it wouldnt be common,but possible

Expert:  Tim's Auto Repair replied 1 year ago.

again,it is likely that the transmission is done,,but if you want to try something, the filter would be the only thing to try that could be doing this short of rebuilding the transmission

thanks

By forward clutch, do you mean sprag clutch? After reading this link here, I discovered that my car drives fine when I switch gears manually. 1-2-3-D

Expert:  Tim's Auto Repair replied 1 year ago.

yes,,the forward..not the sprag..

if it does wll in all of the gears manually shifting, the problem may be the tfp switch on the valve bodytfp[transmission fluid pressure]

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
I'm not getting any codes for a TFP switch.
