Hello. Welcome to Just Answer. Please allow me to assist you. Based on experience, the cause of this is usually a loose or broken shift cable retainer at the shift arm that is in the side of the transmission. The cable is held tight to a small bracket on the transmission. If the cable is loose, the shift arm will not be moved properly, thusly causing your problem. You will need to gain access to see the transmission lever. Have an assistant move the shift lever while you observe the operation of the cable. If the cable exterior moves in any fashion, any movement at all, this is your problem.
