Hello and welcome to JustAnswer! IF the trans was in limp in then it would be taking off in and staying in third gear. If you're positive it was stuck in first then limp in wouldn't be the case. There are quite a few things that will cause a delayed or lack of shift into second gear. It could be a trans governor issue, lack of signal from the output speed sensor, or it could be a kickdown band problem. The kickdown band could be out of adjustment, it may have failed or the anchor could be out of position, or the servo could be leaking. You're checking the fluid level with the engine running and trans in neutral?Have you checked for fault codes?
