Customer Question

I own a car that my friend borrowed. It broke down and she sent it to her mechanic. After a symposium I learned my car was at this mechanic. I went to get my car. He yelled at me about driving the car. He said he could look into finding out what was wrong with it, not turning over. Later, he called and said the engine was damaged. The cost to find this information out was $600. He said it is not drivable, donations will not give you much money for it, and that he has a business partner who uses car parts. He would forgive the $600, it I gave him the car for parts. I found a DMV form @ transferring ownership. Filled it out and gave it to him to have his business partner fill the other part out and finalize the transaction. 3 months later he called and said the form is not valid. He had his mechanic fix my car and the mechanic tried to register it. The car is still in my name. Gus, the owner of Brentwood Tires and I talked about this problem. He said he had his mechanic fix the vehicle and sold it to the mechanics wife for $1400. Gus asked me for the title and said his mechanic is going to have his daughter drive the car who is not 16 until August. I would never have given my car away if I knew this was going to happen. How do I get my car back?

Good morning. I am Loren, a licensed attorney, and I look forward to assisting you.

I am not clear on what the status of your title is. You say that you filled out a form to transfer title to the mechanic. Is the title still in your name? Is your signed transfer of title still out there somewhere?
