Customer Question
Hello there, I have...

Hello there, I have a 2018 Tundra, and am looking at doing performance headers and high flow cats. Have been told I need software to retune the o2 sensors on the exhaust. Help?

Mechanic's Assistant: Have you located all of the vehicle's oxygen sensors? Are the wires leading to and from each intact and in good shape?

Well, I haven't looked, but they should all be in good condition. Biggest issue I have, Is I cant find any software to help with this

Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Tundra yourself? What have you tried so far?

Im having a company in north Carolina called Kooks do the tuning and install on these parts

Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?

Truck already has a performance exhaust, cold air intake, and throttle body spacer

Hello my name is ***** ***** welcome to just answers! I will be assisting you with all of your vehicle questions today. Please be aware I do not know your skill level or abilities so I will be asking a lot of questions and in a lot of cases we will respond to each other quite a lot before we find a solution. As far as phone calls are concerned you will receive a system automated call request, that is not me, and they do cost more money, I prefer text but in some cases a phone call is required. If I don’t answer right away or quickly in conversation I am helping another customer or have stepped out for a moment and will respond as soon as I can. Also I am not paid hourly by just answers, I am only paid when you rate me, so if you could please respect my time and knowledge by rating me when we are finished that would be wonderful. If you could please indicate your level of experience and what you are looking to get out of your session today. Ok lets get started! Who is saying you need a tune? do you have any other upgrades than the ones you mentioned

Kooks Headers and Exhaust company is the ones saying I need a tune. No sir, those are the only engine upgrades I have besides flowmaster 10 racing mufflers.
Toyota Mechanic: Mechanic01, ASE Certified Technician replied 28 days ago

that interesting, unless they are moving the location of the sensor I wouldnt think it would need a tune, believe or not all those modifications arnt making that much difference to see a drastic change, what I think would warrant a tune is supercharger or blower setup

Even though they are doing a set of long tube headers?
Toyota Mechanic: Mechanic01, ASE Certified Technician replied 28 days ago

correct, you do in fact get better flow but the percentages you will barley see on a dyno unless your adding around 100 hp or so.

Interesting. So in your opinion, as a certified Toyota mechanic, your telling me I don't need the tune?

If you are satisfied with your answer, please take a moment to rate my service before you go. Experts are not compensated without a positive rating. Providing a rating does not close the question, you can reply or ask additional questions without incurring further charges. Rating my answer positive charges your account the full question value and credits me. Submitting for a refund removes the credit from my account and makes me donate my time and experience for free, which is not my intention. Please only rate positive if you are satisfied and intend on paying for the services you agreed to. Thanks!

if for any reason, you can't rate my answer OKAY, GOOD, or EXCELLENT/3 STARS OR HIGHER today. Please reply and let me know why, so I can help more/better. All follow up responses are FREE, after completing the required rating
Please remember to rate service using the separate rating page. Thank you

You will find a good PCM flash tune will really wake it up compared to any bolt on parts.

The combination of your exhaust parts above might add another 10hp, or so.

A little bit that you will notice.

A good software tune will completely change the vehicle.

I've seen many software tunes of your capacity at 60hp plus, some at 100hp, tune only.

Thanks for the info Gary. But to that, I'm actually being told that between a unichip tuner that I already have, and an air induction pump bypass kit, this will work. Downside is that the aip kit is for a 2012 5.7 engine. I'm under the impression that there's no difference between the 2012 5.7 Toyota v8, and the 2018 5.7 Toyota v8
Toyota Mechanic: Gary, ASE Certified Technician replied 21 days ago

Mechanically I don't think there is, since it has been the same engine for some time.

But PCM, wiring harness, and tuning could be different.

We have yet to delve into this area, vehicle is too new.

Your tuner might know more.
