I have a 2003 Toyota Highlander and the fuse labeled Tail…

Customer Question
I have a 2003...

I have a 2003 Toyota Highlander and the fuse labeled Tail has a direct short to ground. As soon as you activate the running lights you can hear the relay sink but it blows the fuse immediately. I am lookin for the comprehensive wiring diagram for the Tail circuit. I have a basic wiring diagram but it does not show everything else that is on that same circuit. For example when I toggle the steering wheel mounted switch the running lights are not the only thing supposed to come on.

I have also unplugged the driver side kick plate connectors feeding the tail lights and I still get a short to ground leading me to believe the short is not in the tail lights

Hello my name is ***** ***** welcome to just answers! I will be assisting you with all of your vehicle questions today. Give me one moment while I review your question and come back with a answer. Please be aware I do not know your skill level or abilities so I will be asking a lot of questions and in a lot of cases we will respond to each other quite a lot before we find a solution. As far as phone calls are concerned that is a system automated prompt , not me, and they do cost more money, I prefer text but in some cases a phone call is required. If I don’t answer right away or quickly in conversation I am helping another customer or have stepped out for a moment and will respond as soon as I can. Ok lets get started!

Ok heres is the diagram, let me know if you can view it

Yea I have that diagram but like I said I have unplugged the wires feeding the tail lights and still get a short.
Toyota Mechanic: Mechanic01, ASE Certified Technician replied 3 months ago

where did you unplug them at ?

Ask Your Own Toyota Question
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
There are junction connectors by the driver side floor kick plate
Toyota Mechanic: Mechanic01, ASE Certified Technician replied 3 months ago

are you talking about junction connector 13 in the diagram?

Ask Your Own Toyota Question
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
Wait actually I don’t have that diagram I have the one from Haynes repair manual which I’m sure is just a generalization of the wiring... I can’t see the words or I’m assuming numbers on the diagram it’s fuzzy when I try to enlarge it
Toyota Mechanic: Mechanic01, ASE Certified Technician replied 3 months ago

try this one and let me know where you unplugged it

I think I was unplugging the wrong junction connector. Ok so I ohmed out the solid green wire at my tail light and it is shorted to ground or the frame of the car... any advice on how to get to junction connector 13? Is it under a panel?
Toyota Mechanic: Mechanic01, ASE Certified Technician replied 3 months ago

unless all the light bulbs in the circuit and the relay is unplugged it will ohm to ground, have you done that?

Ask Your Own Toyota Question
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
Ok so took out all bulbs and took out the relay under the dash and still reading continuity with hot to ground
Toyota Mechanic: Mechanic01, ASE Certified Technician replied 3 months ago

front rear and license plate bulbs?

Ask Your Own Toyota Question
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
To expedite things... does a blown fuse not mean a shorted out wire. A hot touching ground?
Toyota Mechanic: Mechanic01, ASE Certified Technician replied 3 months ago

it does, but to find it you must get a clear circuit which means removing all the things that could false read to ground

Ask Your Own Toyota Question
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
Gotcha... ok all tail light bulbs are out... rear license plate lights are out... don’t have front license plate lights... and the relay that turns the running lights on is out... check continuity from solid green feeding left rear tail light to ground and it rings
Toyota Mechanic: Mechanic01, ASE Certified Technician replied 3 months ago

ok im looking now for the exact location on the junction 13, have you started following the wires down the frame checking for rub spots yet?

Ask Your Own Toyota Question
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
Yea I’ve followed it past the front seat and to the middle of the back seat down the frame nothing so far... I figure if I can locate junction 13 I’ll unplug it and see if it still pops the fuse... that way I’ll know if it’s before the back seat or after
Toyota Mechanic: Mechanic01, ASE Certified Technician replied 3 months ago

its only giving me the worded location so I imagine its behind the drivers side, you may also have to get a circuit finder, harbor fright has them and they are awesome, 30 bucks

Ask Your Own Toyota Question
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
Yea I bought one yesterday... I’m actually a master electrician so I felt like I knew what I was doing but I am def not an auto mechanic... I read the directions on it and hooked it up to that fuse and it started pinging on wires that went behind the radio... I had the whole front dash apart... anyways what is the worded location of junction 13? I have junction connectors under the driver side kick plate that looked like they went rearward towards the tail lights... I unplugged all of those and still blew the fuse
Toyota Mechanic: Mechanic01, ASE Certified Technician replied 3 months ago

alls it says is left rear of vehicle
