39;06 Toyota Highlander Hybrid (~237k miles) related...While accelerating on a highway last night heard a metallic noise and eased off. Did not have any codes appearing. Tested it by accelerating and again, bad noise (only heard such things when having motor issues many years ago so likely mechanical/metal), eased off. Wanted to best diagnose and learned on the side of the highway that reverse was fine, as was not being in gear but immediately when put into gear, metal on metal and then car halted abruptly (was then safely in breakdown lane trying when motionless), wouldn't start, presuming likely safety mechanism with hybrid system... had to tow vehicle.Your thoughts on issue including best guess on time & price to repair (range) as I need to make a "do I throw good money after bad" decision considering a great vehicle to date but a TON of miles and not cheap to deal with hybrid systems (~300 volts, tons of amps, not many folks trained and safely capable).I'm thinking likely part of the Hybrid transmission (entirely different than regular trannys as has electric motors and generators... amazing systems now).

Did you run a scan test since it is in the no start condition? Do you have an audio file of the metal on metal noise so I can hear it?

Sorry, no audio file as I was driving on a highway with my son when this occurred. Have not had any time to run a scan but will likely later today. Naturally, will know a bit more (likely) after doing this but wanted to get right on this to consider all likely scenarios, options and cost ranges to begin thinking about long term choices (how long to rent a car for, should I be actively looking for mechanics or buying a new car, etc.).

Do you have hybrid certs?
Toyota Mechanic: Skyvisions, ASE Certified Technician replied 4 months ago

Fully hybrid certified 35 years with Toyota. I have been working on hybrid since 01 also have ASE L3 hybrid certification. I'd rather not get into making comments about what could be going on until we find out what malfunction codes are set in the system causing it to not come on. Just post that information back here when you get it.

Got it, will do... maybe able to get a read on it (not dealer depth as you are likely anticipating) later today and will update accordingly.

Will have an ASE mechanic at my place tomorrow and he's got a far more extensive reader, will pull codes then and let you know. He will likely also be able to repair depending on what's happening as he also have some Hybrid certs.
