There is a faint...

There is a faint whirring noise that just started coming from front belt end of the engine. 2009 Camry 4 cyl. Alternator

Mechanic's Assistant: Where exactly do you think the noise is coming from? And how long has this been going on?

?

Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Camry yourself? What have you tried so far?

Just started a couple of days, but I haven't been driving it until I have an idea of what it may be. It sounds like it may be coming from the alternator. Yes I will fix myself if not too serious.

Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?

Has about 175,000 miles on it.

Hi, my name is ***** ***** I will be happy to assist with this today. In some cases, I may need more info to assist better.I apologize for any delay.

This can be caused by the alternator bearings wore out causing this issue or the belt or one of the other pulleys with their bearings failing. What needs to be done from here it to remove the belt temporarily and spin each pulley one at a time until you find one that feels rough or has an odd sound to it.This would be the pulley/component needing replaced. If this is found to be o.k. then run the engine just briefly to see if the noise is still heard. If it does not check the belt for any wear or damage indicating it needs to be replaced.

If more help is needed, use the reply tab to continue our conversation. If no further assistance is needed, kindly rate my service, your 5-star rating is appreciated ( should be a link to click on here or above). You can rate at any time and we can continue to work on your question as this will not close out your question.I work on delivering the best answer and help here but in some cases, it can be difficult to do without seeing the vehicle.

Thanks Pete

I haven't removed the belt but I squirted some water on it and no change in sound.

Ok, this usually indicates it isn't the belt in most cases. You may be correct and this may be the alternator needing to be replaced but I would check all pulleys to be sure.

Thanks Pete
