I'm nearly certain its the alternator. Died down, lights flickering, car eventually turned stopped running.

Dash lights, radio, and eventually headlights

2006, Toyota 4runner

Have not tried to so far. I've fixed alternators before but 20 years ago. It happened at night so I just rolled to a park spot and left it. going to look now. not sure how complicated it will be in this particular vehicle

I guess my question is 1 Do you think its the alternator and 2, how challenging is it to replace myself. For example, are there other things that will need to be replaced with it in this type of vehicle?

Hello. Welcome to Just Answer. Please allow me to assist you. This indeed sounds to me like a bad alternator. The replacement of this unit is not what one would call 'easy". You need to remove the battery cables, disconnect the wires to the alternator, slack off the adjuster pulley, and then remove the alternator mounting bolts to extract the alternator. An experienced tech can do this is an hour with the proper tools. If you have never done this before note that the belt tension adjuster can be difficult to loosen due to rust. The adjuster bolt is known to break off when loosening it or re tightening. With that in mind, you may achieve the replacement, but will not be able to properly tension the belt.
