I have a 2005 Sienna with approx. 200K miles on it.
The Check Engine and VSC lights are coming off and on.
They were reset once and stayed off for a couple of months. The came back on, reset and stayed off for a day. Recently they are coming on and off by themselves.OBD codes read are P20420, P0430 and P0174
Local mechanic says I need two cats.Question that both fail at the same time and that the indications come and go now. Also read that there are many strange things that can cause the CE and VSC lights to come on together.

on a Toyota, any time the check engine light comes on, the trac or VSC lights come on by default.

No call - stop trying to raise the anti or refund my $20!
Toyota Mechanic: david craig, Auto Mechanic replied 3 months ago

How did the mechanic go about coming to the conclusion that you needed the cats? did he do a back pressure test on the exhaust?

Ask Your Own Toyota Question
Toyota Mechanic: david craig, Auto Mechanic replied 3 months ago

I am not sure how they decided it was the cats. They took they car and said they had to check a lot of things our - light vacuum leaks. The check engine light came on before without the VSC light - long time ago
Toyota Mechanic: david craig, Auto Mechanic replied 3 months ago

well the vsc light has nothing to do with the p0420 0r p0430 or p0174

Toyota Mechanic: david craig, Auto Mechanic replied 3 months ago

you need to find out if they did a back pressure test and let me know.

I'll have to get back with you - HowAny other questions for the mechanics?
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
If there is no relation between CE and VSC - why do you say they always come on together?
Toyota Mechanic: david craig, Auto Mechanic replied 3 months ago

the vsc comes on by default id it senses certain engine failures

Customer reply replied 3 months ago
The did not do a back pressure check - they don't do it routinely. Says it would indicate a plugged cat which would not set the codes. The codes are efficiency indicators.
Toyota Mechanic: david craig, Auto Mechanic replied 3 months ago

they do not know what they are talking about. a plugged cat is inefficient. correct? please have them do the test.

Ask Your Own Toyota Question
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
They are click and clack recommended and very honest.I am not paying you to send me back to them.Do you feel both cats would fail together and that they indications would come and go by themselves? Those are the questions I want an answer to now.
Toyota Mechanic: david craig, Auto Mechanic replied 3 months ago

Do you want an answer without doing the proper test? replace both cats then

Ask Your Own Toyota Question
Toyota Mechanic: david craig, Auto Mechanic replied 3 months ago

it might fix your problem. it might not. its impossible to tell without the test. maybe they just don't know how to do the test.

Ask Your Own Toyota Question
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
I believe the current mechanic who has seen and tested the car that the back pressure test is not required. The car is running fine.Yes - I'll take your best answer - other than go talk to someone else
Customer reply replied 3 months ago
If they were clogged, it would fix the problem. If they aren't like the believe to be the case, something else is wrong. Go from the point that the test was done and no issues found.

Both documents the same. How about answering the on and off and probability questions?
Toyota Mechanic: david craig, Auto Mechanic replied 3 months ago

How about having the back pressure test done. if they aren't fully clogged that would explain the on/off issue. Ive been doing this a long time. Now please follow my recommendation
