2004 avalon and I am attempting to replace both axles assemblies. Looking at this article looks like I need to remove one bolt and the snap ring on the passenger side to remove the axle.

Correct, remove the snap ring, back out the 14mm bolt. Sometimes they get rusted on there, in that event it will be difficult to get the axle bearing from its race. You will need to tap on the bearing assembly with a hammer while someone prys on it.

Remember to de-stake your axle nuts before removing them. Everything else is straight forward.
