Customer Question
Hello - I have a...
Hello - I have a 2007 Toyota Tundra CrewMax 4WD with just under 98K on the odometer. I was wondering if the following issue was ever resolved:https://www.justanswer.com/toyota/7cpne-tundra-just-put-pads-rotors-front-buddy-s.htmlI have the exact same problem. I changed front pads at about 88K and never opened the brake lines, but now my brake pedal goes slowly to the floor over the course of about 5 to 10 seconds. I can still stop the truck and with normal stopping pressure to the brake pedal it will not sink. But if I press real hard it will slowly go to the floor. Luckily it holds the truck in place even when the pedal is on the floor. I have purposely activated the ABS wondering if cycling the ABS pump would fix it but no luck. I also tried lifting the pedal real fast after it hit the floor and pumping it a few time before giving it the steady pressure again. No luck there either. In the above link there was reference to a master cylinder piston seal becoming damaged and slowly leaking brake fluid back into the reservoir. Is this the likely fix? Any idea if there is a seal kit or do I need a whole new master cylinder?

have you checked the system for leaks?

I have never added fluid nor changed it the entire time I have owned the vehicle and I am the only owner. There are no leaks at the master or wheel cylinders and the reservoir is full.
Toyota Mechanic: john, The Car Guy replied 8 months ago

then yes the likley failure is the master cylinder

Ask Your Own Toyota Question
Customer reply replied 8 months ago
In what way? A blown seal or o-ring? How do I bleed the system if I change or rebuild the master cylinder? Is there a technique where I can change the master cylinder without a system bleed?
Toyota Mechanic: john, The Car Guy replied 8 months ago

yes internal bypass usually just as easy to replace them i am not aware of any rebuild kits for the master cylinder...you can pull it apart the piston assembly locks in with a snap ring... But we always just replace them and bench bleed and they are good to go

When you say bench bleed is that for just the master cylinder or does bench bleed include the brake lines? It sounds like I can replace the master cylinder without bleeding the brake lines if I am careful and use the bench bleed method. Is this true?
Toyota Mechanic: john, The Car Guy replied 8 months ago

yes bench bleed is bleeding the master cylinder on a bench thats where the name bench bleed comes from..if your carefull the whole system does not require bleeding

Thanks. How do I avoid introducing air to the brake lines when I disconnect them from the master cylinder? Or introducing air when I reconnect them?
Toyota Mechanic: john, The Car Guy replied 8 months ago

both but usually its easy and simple just dont rattle the lines to bad when ya seperate and u will be fine
