Customer Question
96 tacoma 2.7...

96 tacoma 2.7 runs but shuts off after ignition is inthe on position what tells the circuit open relay to stay closes?

Mechanic's Assistant: How many miles are on the car? Has the car been starting normally?

Set for a bit. Wires at pump were chewed into but fixed them was told crankshaft sensor feeds it . 175000 miles

Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Tacoma yourself? What have you tried so far?

Yes started fine when parked

Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?

That should do it . It will run just fine if I close relay by hand.

Still not seeing what takes over after start relay
Toyota Mechanic: david craig, Auto Mechanic replied 5 months ago

the ecm takes over as long as its seeing rotation and the correct voltage. it keeps the c.o.r. latched as long as the efi relay is closed

Hello, what the other expert was telling you is correct, the computer keeps the COR closed after the engine starts but only if the EFI relay is functioning correctly which I assume is the case, the ECM keeps the COR closed by grounding the green/yellow wire as long as it sees all the input signals necessary, even if spark is lost it will open the relay, yes a cam or crank sensor can cause this as well. instead of ohm testing which is time consuming why don't you try to rent or borrow a code reader or even buy one, they are some for about $30 or so and see what diagnostic codes are in the ECM, if it's missing a signal it will give you a code number and then you can go from there. Reply here if you need any help in dealing with the code number and I'll be glad to offer any advice to help.

Toyota Mechanic: Ted Ritter, Toyota Master Tech replied 5 months ago

Thanks for the reply, let me check on that, it should actually only be two, be right back.

The crank position sensor is located on the timing cover right next to the crank pulley and has two wires going up to a connector.
