I have a 2004 Tundra...
I have a 2004 Tundra SR5 4X4, original owner. Truck has 250K miles on it now. All original. The truck still runs fine for being old, but during a COLD start aftering sitting maybe 8 hours or so, the engine seems to be louder at start up. last night it was like the engine made a loud whinning sound at start up...not a metal on metal noise just something else.Anything I can do to help this truck during cold starts. It doesn't like starting when all the oil is at the bottom of the engine. How about Slick 50? Any other recommendations

Hello. Welcome to Just Answer. Please allow me to assist you. A loud whirring noise on startup usually indicates a starter drive issue. This would not be uncommon if the starter on this truck was original. Regarding the cold start issue, does it crank longer than usual?

crank doesn't really take longer than usual. Just wondering about how to keep truck going as long as possible...Slick 50???
Toyota Mechanic: Toyota Service, Toyota Expert replied 7 months ago

I would recommend 20W-40 "High Mileage motor oil. Slick 50 is not a great idea if you have excess clearances at the main and rod bearings. This would be expected at 250 K miles.

20w-40? U mean 20w-50??
Toyota Mechanic: Toyota Service, Toyota Expert replied 7 months ago
20w40 or 20w50. I would use 20w40 if where you are located gets cold in the winter.
