Customer Question
I have a 2015...

I have a 2015 Tacoma 4.0l engine. I have 66,000 miles on it and this morning I started the truck after it sitting 1.5 weeks no use and the engine sounded like no oil, rattled, knocked. Stopped it then restarted, noise but then settled down to the normal sound like oil at all the right places. took about 30 sec. to get there. Dave

Mechanic's Assistant: Where exactly do you think the noise is coming from? And how long has this been going on?

From the front of the engine and this is the first time as normally use the truck every day.

Mechanic's Assistant: Are you fixing your Tacoma yourself? What have you tried so far?

Have tried nothing, just so surprised of the noise, after a warm up it sounded good and a*****all good.

Mechanic's Assistant: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?

Not that I can think of as always a good truck, wondering if it could be oil rundown for sitting so long?

It is likely from sitting so long. The timing chain tensioners are filled with oil when the engine is running. Technically you should be able to leave it and not have them leak down, but 1.5 weeks could be enough for the tensioners to leak down and allow the chain to hit the chain guides for a bit until they pump back up. Since you normally drive it daily it's likely not going to be a problem, and certainly would be difficult to properly diagnose, but it sounds like the tensioner lost oil pressure which allowed the chain to hit which caused all the noise. If it becomes a daily issue then you need to have it taken care of or repair it yourself, but at this point I don't honestly think there is a lot that could be done. I mean you could replace them, but it would probably just be a guess and not be diagnosed properly. Once it happens more often a shop could diagnose it. We do see this quite a lot however.
