What does the theft light do with the key in the run position?

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
It doesn't crank at all. Let me check the theft light now.
Customer: replied 1 month ago.
The light does nothing.
Expert:  Chris (aka-Moose) replied 1 month ago.

Have you tried to start it in neutral?

Do you own a test light or volt meter?

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
I tried it in neutral, nothing. No test light or volt meter.
Expert:  Chris (aka-Moose) replied 1 month ago.

Do you know someone with the tools so you can borrow them? We are out of tests to do at this point.

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
I'll call around and see. It could be a little while till I can buy or borrow one. Like maybe tomorrow morning or so. Do I recontact you here?
Expert:  Chris (aka-Moose) replied 1 month ago.

Sure just respond here when ready.

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
Yo Moose, you still there?

Expert:  david craig replied 1 month ago.

Hi Im David, can you pull the starter relay and check for 12vdc on position 3 of the relay plug please

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
You'll have to go a little slower. I'm not mechanically inclined.
Customer: replied 1 month ago.
Start again and go slower. What's the starter relay?
Customer: replied 1 month ago.
Where is it?
Expert:  david craig replied 1 month ago.
Customer: replied 1 month ago.
I have a circuit tester. Will we need it?
Expert:  david craig replied 1 month ago.

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
I was told by the last expert to get either or so I got the circuit tester.
Expert:  david craig replied 1 month ago.

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
That's all I have. Just tell me where to stick it.
Expert:  david craig replied 1 month ago.

put it in the number 5 slot of the relay slot

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
The diagram you sent me doesn't look like what I'm seeing under my hood.
Expert:  david craig replied 1 month ago.

it is exactly what i sent.

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
See, I have no idea what I'm doing. Proof right here. Sorry about that. Do I lift up the purple thing and stick it in its place?
Expert:  david craig replied 1 month ago.

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
It lit right up.
Expert:  david craig replied 1 month ago.

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
Next step?
Expert:  david craig replied 1 month ago.

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
I had my girl help me hold it in the start position and nothing happened.
Expert:  david craig replied 1 month ago.

ok. not good

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
At this point, does it seem like the starter or the alternator?
Expert:  david craig replied 1 month ago.

make a jumper wire. put one end in 3 and the other end in 5

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
What works best?
Expert:  david craig replied 1 month ago.

a piece of wire stripped on both ends

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
That might take some time.
Expert:  david craig replied 1 month ago.

ok well its late here Ill be back on in the morning. when you jumper 3 to 5, the starter should crank. if not then the starter is bad. let me know

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
Okay. I'll try to see what I can do. Until tomorrow then.

check the 7.5 amp starter fuse on the right side under dash fuse panel

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
It looks as if I have to take apart the glove compartment to get to it.
Customer: replied 1 month ago.
I managed it. Top or bottom fuse?
Customer: replied 1 month ago.
Top or bottom fuse?
Expert:  david craig replied 1 month ago.

Customer: replied 1 month ago.

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
Standby
Customer: replied 1 month ago.
They look good. I'm going to replace them though so we can eliminate those as a problem for a long while.
Customer: replied 1 month ago.
Next step?
Expert:  david craig replied 1 month ago.

you need to disconnect the neutral safety switch and check for power on position 4, black/yellow wire while someone hold the key to start postion.

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
Where is that located?
Expert:  david craig replied 1 month ago.

on the transmission

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
Picture?
Customer: replied 1 month ago.
Please remember I'm not a mechanic.
Expert:  david craig replied 1 month ago.

you need to remove the air cleaner box, battery and air tube.

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
This is a little beyond my scope of mechanical abilities.
Expert:  david craig replied 1 month ago.

well thats the next step. if that tests good, then the ecm is the culprit

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
What is the ecm?
Expert:  david craig replied 1 month ago.

engine control module. the brains of the car

Expert:  david craig replied 1 month ago.

ill be back on in about 45 minutes.

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
How much is that to replace?
Expert:  david craig replied 1 month ago.

you can but a preprogrammed one for your car form ebay for around 200.00

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
my friend came over and found the problem. The shifter cable is either loose or broken. The reason the van wasn't starting is because it was stuck in D. He checked it by manually shifting the gears under the hood where the shifter cable connects to the transmission.
Expert:  david craig replied 1 month ago.

and thats the neutral safety switch, where I wanted you to access,

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
He didn't have to remove anything to find the problem. I couldn't do it myself.
Expert:  david craig replied 1 month ago.

very good. glad its taken care of

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
He only found the problem. Now, the challenge is to find someone who will be willing to change it without costing me an arm and a leg. It's not real easy to access.
Expert:  david craig replied 1 month ago.

if you remove the things i told you too, it is easy to access

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
I'll be on the search for someone.
Expert:  david craig replied 1 month ago.

what about you buddy?

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
I don't think I have the tools or skills needed to complete the job.
Expert:  david craig replied 1 month ago.

ok my friend. well good luck then

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
