My 2001 Toyota Avalon was given a new catalytic converter, as Pete suggested, but I still have a problem. The car emits a cloud of blue smoke when starting up and occasionally when starting from an intersection. I've been told I must have an engine leak somewhere, but how can I find the exact cause and get it repaired?

Hi my name is ***** ***** I will be happy to assist with this today. In some cases I may need more info to assist better.I apologize for any delay.

The blue smoke is caused by either valve seals leaking needing replaced or an issue with piston oil rings leaking.

Since it only occurs when starting from an intersection and on start up occasionally this is usually the fault of the valve seals leaking. They leak down at idle at a stop and after the vehicle sits, this is why you see the smoke on start up and at idle.

I suspect your valve seals need replaced.

I would also have the engine ventilation system/pcv system checked for any restrictions or issues as this can cause oil to be burned off in the engine. These are the only two things I see myself to cause this fault here.

If more help is needed, use the reply tab to continue our conversation. If no further assistance is needed, kindly rate my service, your 5 star rating is appreciated ( should be a link to click on here or above). You can rate at any time and we can continue to work on your question as this will not close out your question.Keep in mind in some cases it can be difficult to fully diagnose or help repair your vehicle without seeing it and I work on delivering the best possible answer from what I see to work with.

Thanks Pete

Thank you, ***** ***** your excellent long-distance diagnoses! I just have one more question about my smoke problem. First though, I'm afraid I have to confess a stupidity of mine. Last Thanksgiving, we made a 300 mile trip to visit our daughter, and during the last hour of the trip, the engine oil light came on. I looked under the hood and checked the most obvious dipstick, which was the transmission oil, and found it was FULL (I'm sure I had checked the correct dipstick many times previously, but not this time.) So I kept driving with almost no oil for nearly an hour. After arriving, I finally realized my error. After replenishing the oil, and prayer, by the grace of our Lord Jesus, we made it home without incident. But I'm sure the smoke problem wasn't helped any! I was told recently that our engine is not a Toyota, but I think he said a Lexus engine (6-cyl).
Could you take a guess at what it would cost to repair the valve seals? The piston rings?

If it was piston rings your looking at around $1000 in most cases to have replaced. If it is valve seals maybe around $350
