they are the same frame. the prerunner is basically a 4wd tacoma converted to 2wd. it has 4wd suspension and all.
that is true the prerunner has lighter springs due to the reduced weight of the truck from not having the 4wd components
same both the front and rear are lighter springs. but it is a straight swap over to put the 4wd springs on to it.
that is not true the springs will work all the way around.
yes they all did for a number of years. however it is an open customer satisfaction recall through toyota and if your is deemed unsafe then it will be replaced free through a dealership

yes i would but it is not manditory. you will have a softer ride with the lighter springs and to be honest you may not even notice the difference.
