Customer Question

2005rav4. New vehicle to me. Fairly well maintained but battery was weak. Whe i pulled it to replace it was cooking hot. Five days into new battery its indicator light comes on and low humming nose comeing frim alternator corner and i think i smell the belt cooling a bit too. It iseems to be charging as i can hear the load put on the motor when i turn on headlights. I am assuming the alternTor is working but needs replacement however the super hot old battery makes me wonder if that is correct.
JA: Have you checked the fuses? Have you checked the bulbs?
Customer: Havent checked anything yet. Still dark. Headed to mechanics later this morning but not sure i can get someone to work on it. Bulbs all seem fine. Which fuses and the cooking battery concerns me. It was mot just weak it was almost too hot to touch making me think it has been weak and the alternatir has killed itself trying to charge it but now witj fresh battery new symptoms erupt
JA: What is the model/year of your Toyota?
Customer: 2005 rav4
JA: Are you fixing your RAV4 yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: If i have too but hopefully not. I am trying to understand what i am up against because i know electrical issues can stump even the best
JA: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?
Customer: No thats a good start

Hello there,

You are lucky that you have found this.

Your alternator is overcharging the battery, possibly as high as 20+ volts, instead of 14 volts.

You need to check the charging rate, and replace the alternator asap.

A hot boiling battery is a fire hazard.

Hope this helps.
