died on road no comm with ecm. no cel with key on. has bat feed, ign feed and good grounds on 5 brown wires. used ecm has same results. 05 scion xb man trans
JA: Does the light stay on, or does it blink?
Customer: cel= no light unless i ground y/gr wire at ecm then light will come on. will not come on
JA: Are you fixing your xB yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: have power at bat wire, ign power when key on. and all grounds to cyl head are good
JA: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?

using autel scantool. can comm with abs. not ecm. generic scantool same result. schematic shows bat feed at connector a1, ign at a3 as only + wires. grounds at d5,d7,d28,c6,c7 all good. power to cel returns to a11.. am i missing something?

Using the diagram below.

Lets go over the powers and grounds once again at the ECM connector.

E3-3 power all the time

E3-1 power with the key on

E6-28 ground

E6-7 ground

E5-6 ground

E5-7 ground

E6-5 ground

I assume all are going to be good after your second test. If so with the key on unplug the cam and crank sensor and confirm there is reference voltage 5 volts there. If not then you may have a sensor or wiring grounding out your ECM.
