I have a 1988 Toyota Camry. Sitting at idle the engine

Customer Question

I have a 1988 Toyota Camry. Sitting at idle the engine sounds pretty quiet. However, when I'm accelerating it sounds like some type of lawn equipment. The vehicle is due up for a timing belt and I was going to replace the tensioners and pulleys as well. Ive also checked the oil level and its sitting perfectly on the max margin. I'm also aware of an exhaust leak coming from my flex pipe. Would this noise be engine related or is it something else that just sounds like it's coming from the engine?

is it a howl?

It almost sounds like a noise made when there isn't any oil in the engine.

is it coming from inside the motor?

I raised the hood up today and it sounded like it may be coming from either the valve cover area or the timing cover

it may be a cam or follower ticking do you have a stethoscope

Would a cam be noisy at idle as well or just at acceleration? How would I be able to check the cam?
