I read your regular vs, synthetic oil column. If you have a high mileage car will the switch to synthetic oil have a detergent effect on cylinder walls and cause sludge buildup?

No, synthetic oil is more resistant to sludge build up than conventional oil. And modern synthetics are not as prone to leakage or wash out as the older formulations. I'm not really sure it will help you that much, but I wouldn't be concerned if you'd like to switch.
