I have a 1992 toyota pickup 4/4 4 cyl was driving along fine then engine started losing power and went to backfiring . will crank and run at idle for about 45 secs. then shuts off.

Hello. Welcome to Just Answer. Please allow me to assist you. This sounds liek you have 2 or three things happening at the same time. The first thing you want to do is bump the engine until the machined TDC line on the crankshaft harmonic balancer is perfectly aligned with the Zero mark on the timing cover. Once you have that done, pull the distributor cap off and look to see the exact placement of the distributor rotor. It should be directly under the part of the cap that leads to the number one cylinder spark plug wire. Inspect this and advise of what you see. Thanks
