Has the 12 volt auxiliary battery in the trunk been checked, has anyone tried to jump start with another car?

What you are describing is typically due to a discharged 12 volt battery in the trunk, if it's original it will most likely need to be replaced, the minimum voltage is 11.8 volts, anything below that and the hybrid system won't activate and the engine will not turn over and you'll get that warning message.
