Hello and thank you for trusting us with your question. I'm DJ.
Did the person at Hertz have a patch over one eye and a sword?
A new switch is between $50 and $150 depending on where you buy it. Labor should be around an hour, which in most cities is $100 or so.
This sounds like the "I don't know what I'm doing and I'll bid this job so much that either the customer will leave or I'll get the job and be able to spend enough time to figure out what's really wrong with the car."
Or maybe the person is just a jerk.
A good shop can do this job for between $150 and $250. Aftermarket parts are much cheaper and almost as good as factory parts. In this case maybe they're better because this is an early failure for a turn switch.
Have you considered doing the job yourself?
