Hello. Welcome to Just Answer. Pleas allow me to assist you.
The check engine light comes on for many different reasons.
Please allow me to ask 2 questions to better assist you
1) is the vehicle running OK
2) did you purchase fuel recently?
Thanks
Customer: replied 2 years ago.
Yes it is running well. Just bought fuel yesterday

Oil 1/2 quart low. Coolant a little low. Fixed thise

Please look to see if the gas cap is as tight as possible.
If the cap is loose, the check engine light will come on. This is by design, as there is a sensor that measures fuel vapor pressure in the tank. If the cap is loose jut a bit, the vapor pressure escapes and this causes the light to come on.

I just took it off and put it back on

Started car and it is idling. Temperature gauge is good.

If the cap was loose, this is what caused the light to come on.
Note that the light will not go out instantly if this was the problem. The vehicle needs to be driven over 2 drive cycles (start/warm up/run/shut off/cool down) before the system will reset.
You may have another problem, but, just getting gas yesterday and the light coming on today usually indicates a loose fit on the cap.

Thank you so much

You are very welcome
As long as it is running ok, it was probably the cap issue.
If I were you, I would get the vehicle attached to a scanner to see exactly what caused the light to come on.
