Mine is toyota hilux LN 166.
What could be the cause of the engine knocking that emanates from the top cover?

A knocking noise under the top cover could be several things.
Most commonly, improper valve clearance is the cause; this can come from worn camshaft lobes, worn valve seats, etc.
There are other things that can also cause this, like lack of oil pressure to that area due to oil pump issues, worn cam lobes, broken valve springs, atc.
The recommendation I have for you would be to remove the top cover (if you have mechanical skills). Look for wear on the camshaft lobes.
Also look for sludge buildup. SLudge is a thick grease that can build up and cause loss oil proper oil distribution. This will cause the cam lobes to wear very rapidly and cause a knock.
