Toyota RAV4 4x4: speedometer on 1997 rav4 is erratic, all wheel

This answer was rated:

speedometer on 1997 rav4 is erratic, all wheel drive
Thank you for choosing JustAnswer and allowing me to help you resolve your Toyota questions! Can you define what you mean by erratic. Is the speedometer needle jumping up-and-down or is it just not accurate overall?
Customer: replied 5 years ago.

Was accelerating and speedo needle dropped suddenly. Then came up some, not to full speed, and was fidgeting up and down. After initial fault needle drifts up and down slowly and never goes to full speed. Sometimes it hesitates, then goes up to around 60 per cent of accual speed. after some constant driving speed it just reads low. At 65 it reads about 45.

If you're not getting any malfunction codes set in the engine control computer then the speed sensor in the transmission or if you have four-wheel ABS and vehicle skid control system, these sensors would be fine. There is also a sensor built into the speedometer head which actually translates the information and sends it to the engine control computer. If any one of the sensors malfunction it would set a code. This being said there is about a 90% probability that the speedometer needle in the head itself or the drive mechanism is going bad. You'll have to replace the speedometer head to have this problem resolved. If you do a Google search for speedometer repairs there a lot of rebuilders online that can rebuild and calibrate your speedometer head. It may be cheaper than buying a new one.
