Toyota Prius can you remove and replace the water pump on

This answer was rated:

can you remove and replace the water pump on a 2004 Prius without using the special spannner tool the official manual recommends? Perhaps the bolts holding the pump to the engine can be removed while the belt is still on?

Genchi Genbutsu :

Thank you for using Just Answer for your needs.

Genchi Genbutsu :

This is what we use at the Dealer....

Genchi Genbutsu :

They can be found on Ebay for about $25, although I just checked and didnt see any.

Genchi Genbutsu :

You can do it with just a flat blade screwdriver wedged in between 2 on the bolts, this will hold the pulley so you can loosen the other bolts.

Genchi Genbutsu :

Are you with me in chat?

Customer:

Sorry, I'm just learning how to do this..

Genchi Genbutsu :

Thats ok.

Customer:

Do you mean my idea of using the tension from the pully belt to hold the pump steady won't work, and you have to use the tool to hold it?

Genchi Genbutsu :

The belt tension isn't strong enough and the pulley will just slip.
