2006 tundra: clutches..diff

Customer Question
Why do the clutches on...
Why do the clutches on my 2006 tundra diff. keep failing. I service according to the
manual . The last ones went out in just 14000 miles in less than 12 months. I tow less than 100 miles a month and only a 1500 lb. trailer. I have had limited slip in two other trucks and never had a problem.

Hello and thank you for using just answer!

How many miles are on the truck now?

Is this ever used off road?

What type of fluids and/or additives are used in your rear end?

Ask Your Own Toyota Question
Customer reply replied 8 years ago
72000. The first diff was serviced at 30000 as per the manual. 80 90 gear oil along with limited slip additive was used. The clutches went out at 58000 under warranty and a new diff. was installed by the dealer. It had a one year unlimited miles warranty. The clutches began to slip after 14000 mi. and under the 12 month limit. Toyota has refused to honor the warranty saying that I am going to have to service the diff. at less than 14000 miles. All they did was change the fluid. As stated before, I tow less than 100 miles a month and only a 1500 lb. trailer with less than 3000 lb.total weight. They said that they were doing me a favor by changing the fluid. They say that you can't go by the manual and that my driving habits are to blame.

When these clutches "fail" what symptom are you having? Is the rear end binding/dragging in turns?
Ask Your Own Toyota Question
Customer reply replied 8 years ago
There is a binding in the drive train that results in some clunking noise and the dragging is noticed when starting and turning at the same time, mostly on left turns.

I figured this is probably the case.
First let me say that I just so happen to have the same truck, I have oversize wheels and tires on mine, I tow my boat and my car trailer every weekend, I use it off road in the mud and I abuse this truck on the road like no one else should...my odometer just hit 80,000 miles and my LSD rear end still works like a champ. What I have found on these rear ends is that the fluid is the key to long term reliability, the standard gl5 with an additive is factory spec but in my opinion is not good enough, and yes servicing it every 30,000 miles is the way to go UNLESS the rear end is submerged in water in which case it should be done immediately.
What I recommend on this truck is a FULL synthetic oil, several companies such as BG, MOC, WYNNS, etc...make a full synthetic 75W140 fluid, using this along with 16 ounces of limited slip additive and also a high heat friction modifier is the only way to go. These is still a good chance that if you switch this out now that you may save this current rear end and the clutches may straighten out.
