2000 Toyota: liter V..000 miles..engine sounds

Customer Question
2000 Toyota 4-Runner Limited with...
2000 Toyota 4-Runner Limited with 3.4 liter V-6 214,000 miles. When attempting to pass and the accelerator is floored the engine sounds like it bogging, the transmission does not downshift into passing gear. Even if the transmission did downshift though I don't believe it would help, the engine does not respond with any pickup when the accelerator is floored.

Yes

Have you had the code checked? If so, what are the codes?
Ask Your Own Toyota Question
Customer reply replied 8 years ago

The guy thats working on it says it throws a throttle position code, he has replaced the throttle position sensor twice and it still keeps throwing a throttle position code.

Toyota Mechanic: Boxer54, Toyota Technician replied 8 years ago
Really, it would help to know the code number. Any chance you can get that. Should be a 4 digit code.

Customer reply replied 8 years ago
I'll have to get that for you in the morning.

P0120 is the code.
Toyota Mechanic: Boxer54, Toyota Technician replied 8 years ago
Has there been any other work done to this vehicle? Is your mechanic using a scan tool capable of reading live data? Does he have a digital volt meter?
Ask Your Own Toyota Question
Customer reply replied 8 years ago

He says he has the best scan tool NAPA makes and he does have a digital volt meter.

Yes the car has had other work done on it--timing belt was replaced, water pump replaced those are the major repairs done.

Toyota Mechanic: Boxer54, Toyota Technician replied 8 years ago
Ok, here's what I need to know. First, I need to know the TPS readings at closed throttle and at wide open throttle. Get these numbers from the scan tool with the key on, engine off. Depending on the tool it will show a voltage or percentage. Either way, I need that reading. Second, from a stop, I need to know the calculated load percentage when accelerating heavily. I need to know the highest reading while accelerating.
Ask Your Own Toyota Question
Customer reply replied 8 years ago

The mechanic said this:

When engine is cool the percentage reading on tp sensor at closed throttle engine off is 13 percent and full throttle engine off is 76 percent. When I ran engine before truck started acting up the highest reading was 70 percent. When engine and transmission got good and warm and truck started acting up the readings left the screen totally on scan tool.

Toyota Mechanic: Boxer54, Toyota Technician replied 8 years ago
So, this is happening after it warms up. Does it ever happen with engine cold, or first start in the morning?
Ask Your Own Toyota Question
Customer reply replied 8 years ago

Yes, after the engine warms up.

Toyota Mechanic: Boxer54, Toyota Technician replied 8 years ago
If this is happening ONLY with the engine warm we have 2 possible scenarios here. Bad sensor or bad wiring. Small chance could be computer, but not too likely. Do you feel comfortable backprobing connectors at the TPS sensor and at the computer?
Ask Your Own Toyota Question
Customer reply replied 8 years ago

When problem first started it happened when the engine was cold or warmed up, after the mechanic worked on it some now it does it after its warmed up.

Toyota Mechanic: Boxer54, Toyota Technician replied 8 years ago
Do you feel comfortable backprobing the wiring at the sensor and computer. This does take some finesse, but will tell us where the problem lies.
Ask Your Own Toyota Question
Customer reply replied 8 years ago
The mechanic has indicated he does not feel comfortable doing the backprobing of the sensor and computer wiring.
