2010 Tacoma pre runner: V6..aftermarket..tires..steering wheel at 61…

Customer Question
I have a 2010 Tacoma...
I have a 2010 Tacoma PreRunner V6 SR5 Longbed) that I can't get aftermarket 16 inch chrome rims to balance. 800 miles on vehicle, all 4 tires switched, 2nd set of rims tried (same style). Did road-force balancing both at rim place and Toyota, still shimmies in steering wheel at 61-62 MPH. Nobody can fix. Toyota says 1 rear tire still mid 30's on roadbalance needs replacing, but shouldn't cause front shimmy. HELP.

There are two things that Toyota used to center the wheel on the hub. The lug nuts and the hole in the wheel is exactly the same size as the outside diameter of the hub. If both are in place, the wheel is perfectly centered.

Aftermarket wheels usually don't have either of these features. They use tapered lug nuts that do a good job of centering the wheel but not perfect. The hubs generally don't match the wheel hole.

So the first thing to do would be to take off a wheel and measure the inside diameter of the wheel hole and the outside diameter of the hub. Wheel manufacturers make concentric rings to solve this problem. If they are the same size (doubt it) we'll have to check some other things.

Thank you in advance for accepting my answer. If you have more questions, just ask. If you feel that my response isn't helpful, please let me know and I will release your question back into the list.

I will go to the tire place and ask them. The manager said they are using special lug nuts that compensate for any issues. This is driving me nuts. I would prefer to keep a dialogue open with you and I don't mind paying for your service.
