2001 tacoma 4x4: the front shocks/struts, does the spring need

Hi there,
Question on a 2001 tacoma 4x4, in order to replace the front shocks/struts, does the spring need to be compressed before removal or is the spring/shock removed as a unit and then compressed and exchanged?

The shock and spring are removed as a unit then a spring compressor is used to change out the shock
