A VPN is a Virtual Private Network that is a safe and secure way for businesses to communicate using the internet. As they do not allow public access, VPNs have strict safety norms to protect confidential data from being leaked. VPNs also have a range of benefits. They bring remote users together, make it easier for companies to network and allow extended telecommuting opportunities to employees. However, you may have come across a few problems while using VPNs. Listed below are a few questions answered by the Experts regarding problems.

My Netgear VPN FVS 318 keeps getting disconnected from the internet. Do you know why?

This could be a problem with firmware updates. Visit the Netgear website, locate your router’s model number and check if it has a firmware update. Download the update and save it on your computer. After you do this, access your Netgear router and get the firmware updated through the download you saved on your computer

Can I increase speed on a VPN connection with my company?

The VPN connection not only depends on the speed of your link but also the number of users on the company’s internet link and the speed of the company’s link. Also, remember that a VPN needs to encrypt and decrypt the traffic. This would again add around 15% overhead to the speed. If you have upgraded the speed of your link, the problem could lie with the company's internet link. If they upgrade the speed, the connection would be faster.

I use a VPN connection with Windows XP and it works fine from home on a wireless internet connection but I have trouble connecting at work when I plug it to a network cable.

Case details: I use an HP Elitebook. At work I am trying to connect to a different network via VPN but the LAN connection is not working. I can access the web using a T-mobile device but not the VPN.

There a few things you could do:

1. Check your LAN settings: Click the Start button, click Settings and then Network Connection. Then disable the wireless connection and try to connect with the VPN after checking that the Ethernet cable is plugged in. If you still can’t connect, try connecting using a wireless connection. If you are able to do so, it would indicate that there is something wrong with your LAN adapter or firewall.

2. Check IP address: Go back to Network Settings, choose your local area connection by right clicking, go to Properties and scroll down to "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)". Click on Properties and check if "Obtain an IP address automatically" has been selected.

3. If you are still unable to connect to the VPN, you need to contact the IT department. Since T-mobile devices use a T-mobile network and not your office network, there could be a policy setup on the router which is preventing you from accessing the VPN. Once they enable you to connect, you shouldn’t have a problem doing so.

When I use my company’s VPN network, I get the following response: Any connect was unable to establish a connection to the specified secure gateway. Please try again. Another pop up says: The VPN client was unable to set up IP filtering. A VPN connection will not be established. What should I do to fix this?

To fix this, you would need to get in touch with the IT department at your company and give them a DART report to help them diagnose the issue correctly. This report can be created by downloading and running the software. For more information, visit:
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/security/vpn_client/anyconnect/anyconnect30/administration/guide/ac12managemonitortbs.html#wp1058615

The DART software should be available with your IT department.

To become a smart and efficient network, VPNs need to be secure, reliable and scalable. VPNs can be managed internally by a company’s IT department or can be contracted to a VPN provider. While a few problems concerning VPNs are listed above, there could be more that are specific to your situation. For more information on setting up and maintaining VPNs, consult with Experts who can offer quick and cost-effective solutions.
