What is the difference between cymbalta and venlafaxine?

Cymbalta and venlafaxine belong to a group known as Deritonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs). Venlafaxine is, generally, the most commonly used inhibitor and was developed in 1994.

Cymbalta is one of the newer drugs developed for depression and was allowed on the market in 2004. The difference between Cymbalta and venlafaxine is that Cymbalta releases more norepinephrine and venlafaxine releases more serotonin.

The brand name for Stemetil is Compro and is made in the U.S. Stemetil is used as an antipsychotic. The brand name for Venlafaxine is Effexor and is used as an antidepressant and SNRI. There is a significant difference in the chemical makeup of the two medications. Furthermore there doesn't appear to be an interaction of the two medications.

What is the risk of taking venlafaxine while pregnant?

The use of Venlafaxine during pregnancy hasn't been extensively studied placing the drug as a category C. The long term effects of using the drug while pregnant aren't fully understood at this time, therefore the use of this drug is usually avoided by pregnant women. Common risks of taking Category C drugs generally pose a risk during the first trimester while the fetus' organs are developing.

Does smoking stop venlafaxine from working?
