Most tail light problems are relatively easy to attend to which the average Hyundai owner can do. However it helps to have guidance in analyzing the problem and how to approach it with the least difficulty. Many Hyundai owners benefit hugely by asking Experts. Read about some of the problems faced and how Experts have helped resolve them.

How to remove a Hyundai Tucson tail-light assembly?

Inside the tailgate on the lamp housing side there are two screws which need to be removed. Once this is done pull the lamp straight back which will release it from the pin connection on the other side. Pry the lamp away gently from the body beginning at the front end of the lamp housing.

Why do the parking and tail lights on a Hyundai Tucson stay on and drain the battery even after the ignition is turned off?

This is the outcome of a problem with the tail lamp relay which is not unusual for this vehicle. The relay gets stuck, even though the key is out, and allows the battery to power the tail lights and parking lights till eventually the battery discharges completely.

The tail lamp relay can be found in the instrument panel fuse box, on the left of the dash, as shown below:

Also illustrated in the above image is the tail lamp relay built into the junction block. To fix the problem the fuse box needs to be replaced. Used replacement units might be available or else one will have to be sourced from a store which stocks Hyundai spares.

How to replace the brake pedal switch on a 6-cylinder Hyundai Sonata since all three brake lights remain on?

The brake light switch is a small switch with a connector at the top of the brake pedal. To locate it one will have to crawl under the dash with a flashlight. Here is an illustration of the layout where it is referred to as the stop-lamp switch.

The switch is secured with a 14mm nut. To remove the switch disconnect the connector then loosen the nut and the switch can be pulled out. Before replacing it with a new switch, reconnect the connector and press the little button to check if the lights go out. If they do then the switch is good and only needs to be adjusted. The adjustment can be done with the nut. However if the lights don’t go out the switch is bad and needs to be replaced. Sourcing a switch online at http://www.rockauto.com/ is the best way to go.

How to remove the tail light bezel on a Hyundai Veracruz to replace a bad brake light?

Undo the two bolts on the side of the lamp under the gate and remove them. The lamp can be pulled straight back to release the outboard side locating pin, but this may need considerable effort. It might be easier to use a small screwdriver tip to lever it out.

If there’s water inside the lamp it’s probably cracked and will be replaced under a recall campaign which applied to vehicles between 5-19-07 and 7-31-07. If the bulb has blown it is covered for free replacement under a 5-year/60,000 mile warranty.

What can be done about Hyundai Sonata tail lights which cannot be turned off?

The brake light switch has probably failed or might need to be readjusted. Remove the switch which is located below the brake pedal and activate the plunger to see if the lights go off when the brake pedal is released. If they don’t then the switch is bad and needs to be replaced. If the lights do go off then the switch needs to be adjusted through the nut.

Replacing a tail light might appear simple but can often turn out to be more difficult than expected. In such situations the best thing a home-repairer can do is to ask an Expert for assistance. Experts are always on standby for just these conditions.
