Toyota Speedometer Related Questions

What does the speedometer code P0500 signify? Or, do you want to know the reason for the Toyota speedometer not working properly? A speedometer is essentially a device which determines and tracks the forward speed of a vehicle. Problems with the speedometer especially when it is not working can be disorienting and frustrating to deal with. Issues with the speedometer are usually accompanied with problems with other related parts of the Toyota. To understand and deal with these problems better, you may need verified Expert input and opinions.

Read below where Experts have answered a few questions about the speedometer on the Toyota.

Why is the Toyota Camry’s speedometer not working and gears not shifting properly either?

The speedometer functions through the use of a signal generated by the speed sensor on the car’s transmission. This sensor is powered by a 10amp gauge fuse (in the dashboard fuse block) which should be working fine if the other gauges are working properly. If it is, most likely, the speed sensor itself is defective.

Is the code P0500 related to the Toyota Sienna speedometer?

Case Details: The reading is 0mph and it is not shifting smoothly.

Typically, the code P0500 sets because the engine control computer is not able to sense the conditioned or formed signal input from the speedometer head. The speed sensor present in the speedometer head communicates a speed signal to the computer when the speedometer functions. If the odometer is functioning but the speedometer needle is not moving, it implies the speedometer head itself could have failed. The odometer working also implies that the speed signal input from the wheel speed sensors or the ABS unit (based on the system) are working fine.

What can be done about the error code P0500 related to the Toyota speedometer?

Most probably, the ABS/VSU engine control unit is malfunctioning or the wire between the ECU and the combination meter is open or shorted to ground. It could also be that the entire speedometer head/combination meter is faulty. In order to confirm this for sure, an oscilloscope is required to check the square waveform emitted from the ABS ECU. If that is the output to the combination meter and the needle still does not register or the odometer, the speedometer will need to be replaced. The common denominator or weakest link in the whole chain is the speedometer head/combination meter assembly. The speedometer head is what is in the combination meter and this is where the needle and odometer are housed.

What is the problem if the Toyota shifter shifts and the speedometer works but the car does not move?

Typically, the car is not equipped with a speedo cable instead it has an electronic speed sensor that transmits information to the speedometer and to the computer. If the speedometer indicates movement similar to the car moving forward (without the car actually moving), it implies the transmission is shifting and transferring power to the final drive. Everything in the transmission is working apart from power not getting transmitted to the axles. The speed sensor can be found on the ring gear that is connected to the drive axles that are meant to drive the front wheels. Most probably, in this case, the differential is not transmitting power to the axles.

Why has the speedometer, tachometer and gas gauge suddenly stopped working on the Toyota Tundra?

If the instrument cluster which houses the speedometer and the other gadgets are not working, the problem is most likely with the cluster itself such as lost power or ground feed or sometimes, a communication problem. There would likely be more electrical issues if there was a communication problem. In order to troubleshoot yourself, you can start by checking the fuses. If they are good, the next step is to use a scan tool to check if the cluster is the only component which is not communicating. The power and ground would need to be tested and ruled out too. Additionally, if the car is covered under basic warranty and the problem is more than a blown fuse, a dealer needs to be contacted.

How to replace the speedometer on a 1992 Toyota Camry LE?

To begin with, the Toyota Camry does not have a speedometer cable. Instead at the location where the cable is meant to attach at the top of the differential on the transmission, a speed sensor with an electrical connector can be found. The speedometer head is driven by an electrical pulse from the speed sensor. Based on the type of problem at hand, the issue is either a faulty sensor or the drive gear on the differential plastic ring strip causing the speed sensor to stop working. The replacement requires a 10mm wrench or socket used to remove the bolt that holds the housing in the top of the differential. One can use their hands to depress the lock tab on the electrical connector to remove it from the top of the sensor. If the environment or climate is conducive for rust and corrosion, the sensor itself can get frozen into the aluminum housing of the differential. If this is the case, it should be held onto with a pair of pliers and wiggled back and forth, in order to pull it out. There should be a plastic drive gear on the end which should be inspected to ensure it is not worn out.

Listed above are some of the Toyota speedometer problems or queries that people have experienced. There may be other problems you are facing or have faced which may not be detailed above or you could be facing a new speedometer problem altogether. In such scenarios, the value of automobile Expert information can be important and useful to help arrive at answers, solutions or get repair options in an affordable and timely manner.
