Chevy Spark Plug Questions

A Spark plug is used for delivering electric current from the ignition system to the combustion chamber of a spark-ignition engine. This current ignites the compressed fuel / air mixture by an electric spark while maintaining the combustion pressure within the engine. Just like with any vehicle part, faults can occur in a Chevy spark plug leading to questions. Listed below are some common questions answered by Experts.

How to access the Chevrolet spark plug numbered 1, 3 and 5 in a 2007 Uplander?

A Chevy spark plug can be reached in two ways. The first is to approach it from under the vehicle if a lift is available. Remove the two rear cradle bolts while ensuring the read of the cradle is supported with a pit jack and lower it slightly. The second way is to take out the air cleaner and ensure the transmission is in neutral. Loosen the two engine strut mounts and using a tie down strap rotate the engine forward and lock it in service position to gain access to the rear of the engine. This will allow access to the spark plugs.

How to replace a rear Chevy spark plug in a 2000 Venture?

Before removing the spark plugs, make sure the engine has cooled down to avoid damaging the cylinder head threads. Also clean the spark plug recess area to avoid contamination of the cylinder head by any foreign material. Make sure the ignition is switched off. If the engine right bank rear spark plugs are being replaced then remove the windshield wiper module cover and rotate the engine for service access. A tool known as the J 41131 Engine Tilt Strap can be used for rotating the engine. Once this is done, disconnect the spark plug wires from the spark plugs and remove the plugs from the engine. Prior to installation, check the gap of all new and reconditioned spark plugs as they may have changed during handling. Putting in plugs with the wrong gap can lead to poor engine performance and even engine defects. Also, ensure the plug fits in smoothly into the cylinder head and is properly seated. Clean the threads with a thread chaser if required. Install and tighten the spark plugs to 20 Nm (15 lb ft) if it is the initial installation and 15 Nm (11 lb ft) if it is re-installation. Reconnect the spark plug wires to the spark plugs. If the engine was moved earlier, then return it back to the proper position and put back the windshield wiper module cover.

To what specifications should a Chevrolet spark plug be torqued in a 6.0L V8 pickup truck?

If the spark plugs are AC Delco 41-110 then the torque should be 15 Nm or 11 lb ft. The specification for the spark plug gap is 1.524 mm or 0.060 in.

How to gain access to the middle Chevy spark plug on the drivers side in a 1998 S10 Blazer?

The middle spark plug can be accessed through the inner fender. Above the tire of the vehicle, there is a rubber flap in the wheelhouse and turning that up will reveal the access. A tool known as the swivel spark plug socket along with an extension will be needed for the procedure. Another way to gain access would be to remove the steering shaft. However that may take up a lot of time.

A spark plug is an important part of a vehicle that can have different problems and would need a specific diagnosis. Hence it is preferable to get advice from Experts who can provide correct information and answer any questions that may arise.
