Chevy Radiator Questions

A radiator is normally used for lowering the temperature in a car, which has an internal combustion engine. The temperature in this engine is lowered with the help of a liquid called coolant, which flows through the engine block where it is heated and then through the radiator where the liquid looses heat. The liquid then passes back through the engine again. The system also comprises other parts such as a water pump that enables the coolant to flow through and an axial fan to move air through the radiator. Since any motor or electrical part is prone to technical issues, various problems could occur in a Chevrolet radiator leading to questions on how to deal with them. Listed below are a few common questions answered by Experts.

If a Chevy radiator fan is not working but the air-conditioner fan is turning on, could there be an issue with the engine temperature?

The engine is likely to overheat while driving if the Chevy radiator fan is not working properly. One would need to install a new radiator fan motor or else there could be a risk of overheating or damage. A motor for the radiator fan can be easily purchased from a local store that sells Chevy parts. It is also advisable to avoid switching on the air conditioner if the radiator fan is not working, as this will generate additional heat.

How does one remove the cooling fan shroud in a Chevrolet radiator?

Ensure that the ignition is turned off and all electrical loads are off before undertaking any repair work on the vehicle. Disconnect the negative battery cable and drain the cooling system partly. Take out the transmission oil cooler lines located below the cooling fan shroud. Then remove both engine mount struts and the front fender diagonal brace located on the upper left side. Disconnect the inlet hose from the radiator and remove the air cleaner assembly. Detach the PCM harness and the cooling fan shields if they are present. Then remove the bolts and clip from the cooling fan shroud and the radiator upper support brackets that are attached. This should enable you to lift the cooling fan shroud out of the vehicle.

Where is the drain plug for a Chevy radiator located and how is it opened?

The drain plug or drain cock is located at the bottom of the radiator in a plastic bottle or plastic sides that are attached to the radiator core. In order to open the drain plug one can use a pair of pliers or a screwdriver to turn the plug anti-clockwise and loosen it to allow the coolant to flow out. To close it, just put the plug back in and turn it clockwise till it shuts completely and feels tight.

What could be the problem in a Chevrolet radiator if the coolant is not flowing through the engine or the radiator causing the engine to overheat?

Such an issue is likely to be caused by air that is trapped in the cooling system of the vehicle. One can try to remove the air by taking out the hose located right on top of the engine and ensuring that the coolant is filled to the brim. Then running the engine to see if the air escapes. Repeat this process a few times if required always ensuring that the coolant is filled up. In case this does not work, then it is best to consult an Expert who will be able to help with the issue.

What could be the problem in a 1999 Chevy Malibu radiator where the radiator fan works when connected straight to the battery but does not switch on with the engine?

To isolate the problem one can use a specific instrument called a Class 2 Scan tool to check the coolant temperature and understand whether the computer is turning on the circuit. One would need to ensure that while conducting a scan on the computer one also checks the fan control parameters.

There are many parts in a Chevy radiator that can develop technical problems wherein each would need a specific solution. In such a scenario, it is preferable to get advice from Experts who can provide the correct information and answer any questions that may arise.
