Quercetin Questions

Quercetin is a flavonoid found in plants and food like grapes, red wine, berries, apples, onions and green tea. Quercetin is often used as an anti-inflammatory medicine to treat heart conditions, high cholesterol and circulation issues. Many other conditions may benefit from using Quercetin such as diabetes, ulcers, inflammation, viral infections, gout, prostate infections, cataracts, hay fever, and asthma and as a treatment for cancer. While it appears that this supplement may be beneficial to many conditions and diseases, there may be potential risks if misused. To learn more about Quercetin and its benefits, take a look below at the questions that have been answered by Experts.

What forms do Quercetin and c-statin come in?

Over the counter both Quercetin and C-statin generally comes in pill form and C-Statin also comes in capsule form. Many OTC Quercetin supplements are combined with Bromelain. Bromelain is an enzyme found in pineapples. Quercetin and Bromelain have anti-inflammatory properties. Quercetin may also be purchased in a water soluble form like hesperidm-methyl-chalcone or quercetin-chalone.The typical dose for the C-Statin supplement is 2-500 mg or up to 6 capsules (1500mg) a day or take as a doctor directs.

Do resveratrol and Quercetin reduce platelet count?

There doesn't seem to be any evidence of resveratrol and Quercetin reducing platelet counts. However, there is a small risk of bleeding when taking resveratrol or Quercetin. Of course if standard doses of each are followed, there is usually no issue of bleeding and should be safe to take. However, these findings are for people who are not currently taking any blood thinning medications.

Can hibiscus, elderberry and Quercetin be taken during pregnancy?

Typically pregnant women or those who are nursing should avoid using hibiscus. The reason for this is because some varieties of hibiscus are often used as abortifacients (will cause a miscarriage). As for elderberry, there isn't enough information as to the safety of elderberry being used by pregnant or nursing mothers. There have been studies regarding Quercetin and pregnancy. One study resolved that there is a possible connection between the use of Quercetin and other boiflavonoids and infant leukemia. It is highly recommended that a pregnant or nursing mother should avoid all of the above mentioned supplements.

Will the combination of Plavix and 250mg of Quercetin, to prevent flushing with niacin, cause platelet aggregation?

Quercetin is an antioxidant which may be beneficial to blocking the oxidative process at the cellular level. If used in combination with Plavix, Quercetin would typically provide a beneficial effect with no known side effects. However, it is always encouraged for a person to speak with his/her doctor prior to adding new supplements when taking any prescription medication.

Many people choose natural or herbal supplements to improve or treat conditions while avoiding pharmaceutical drugs. One such supplement is Quercetin. Many questions arise as to the safety and beneficial properties of this supplement. If a person has questions or concerns regarding Quercetin, the person should ask an Expert for medical clarity and suggestions.
