IP Address Issues

When computers are connected to a network, they need a unique identity that can be used to transfer data to specific computers on a network. The TCP/IP protocol is used typically in most networks today for computers to communicate with each other. The unique number in the TCP/IP protocol that is assigned to each computer is called its Internet Protocol or IP address. Given below are a few questions answered by the Experts on issues related to IP addresses.

My router indicates that I have an issue with my wireless adapter and access point and can’t detect the IP address. What should I do?

Case details: Router worked fine a few hours back but this problem cropped up after I restored the system to 4 days ago. Connection shows hidden when Dlink connection is set up manually. MacAfee was deleted before doing the restore.

Follow the instructions below to fix the problem:

To begin with, go to “Start” and click on it. Right-click on “Computer” and then select “Manage”. Thereafter, open “Device Manager” and then open/expand “Network adapters”. Right-click on the list of items beneath it, click on “Uninstall” and confirm. After this is done, get the computer to restart.

Once it has started, go back to Start->All Programs->Accessories. Go to the “Command Prompt”, right-click on it and click on “Run as administrator”.

There is a list of commands below. Key in each of them but make sure you do this one line at a time and hit enter after every line. Once you do this, restart the computer once again and check if it works okay.
netsh winsock reset
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /flushdns
netsh int ip reset netshlog.txt

My computer runs on Windows XP and I am wondering how to locate my IP address?

Your IP address could either be your internal IP or your Public or External IP.

Follow the instructions below to get your internal IP in Windows XP:

1. Go to the “Start” button at the lower left of your screen, click it and choose "run"

2. In case you don’t see “run”, use this keyboard shortcut:
a. Press the windows key and "r" key together
b. Type “cmd” in the run box without the quotes and hit enter

3. Type “ipconfig” in the command window. Make sure you don’t add quotes and hit enter.

I am attempting to configure my router but find that my computer indentifies the default gateway address but not the router IP address. Why?

Case details: Router – D-Link dir-628, other computers connecting to the router have the same problem, modem – D-Link dsl2320b, Internet Service Provider: AT&T

Follow the instructions below:
1. Turn the power off to the modem
2. Get the router to switch on
3. For 20 seconds, press the reset button on the back of the router
4. Switch off the router
5. Use a network cable to connect the modem's network port to the internet port of the router
6. Switch on the modem and router
7. Get the computer connected to one of the router's LAN ports (1-4)
8. Check Internet connectivity
9. Connect to the router at:

This should work. In case it is a new router and has stopped working without changing the configuration, it could mean that the router has become faulty. It’s possible that the fault is located in the internal logic board and the router isn’t routing network traffic the way it should. It may be not be worth the effort to repair it and may be better to replace it instead.

How can I change the IP address on my modem?

Case details: I have 4 wireless laptops and 2 wireless Xbox consoles. Have installed a Netgear Wireless dual band gigabit ADSL2+ Modern Router (DGND3700).Once my daughter goes online on her laptop, there is a serious lag on Call of Duty followed by all laptops displaying an IP address conflict message.

This usually indicates that the laptop your daughter is using probably has a static IP address which matches one of the other computers or the modem. To fix this, go to her computer and follow the instructions below:
1. Click “Start”, type “Network”
2. Right-click on “Network “and then select “Properties”
3. Go to “Change adapter settings” and click on it.
4. Right-click on “Wireless adapter” and then open “Properties”
5. Double click “TCP/IP IPv4”

Change both selectors to “Automatic” and say “OK” to everything. Finally, restart her computer and check if it works okay.

IP addresses are not only important but also useful especially in cases where you are being spammed or harassed through the internet. With the help of the IP address, you can track down the spammer or locate the owner of the computer that is sending you unsolicited mail and take action against them. Apart from the questions stated above, you may have your own queries about IP addresses. Put them to Networking Experts now and get answers both quickly and cost-effectively.
