What is an inhaler?

An inhaler is an apparatus used to dispense medication to treat asthma. An inhaler dispenses both maintenance and rescue medication, generally for asthma but also Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). This medication can be used in adults and children. For a child a pediatrician would need to be consulted. A metered dose inhaler (MDI) is the most common type of inhaler. This type is a small canister that has the medicine already inside. This keeps the user from having to measure the medicine. Each use of the canister dispenses the exact amount of medicine for the individual.

Can a Fox inhaler be used to for mild asthma attacks?

A Fox air inhaler contains two different types of medication. These are Salmeterol and Fluticasone. Salmeterol is a bronchodilator and Fluticasone is a type of steroid. The Salmeterol is used in assisting breathing. The Fluticasone can help reduce inflammation. Fox inhalers are used as a long acting inhaler. Meaning it is used to prevent future asthma attacks. This medication is not used for mild sudden attacks.

Can Seroflo be used instead of Advair?

Seroflo is not approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This means the safety of this medication is not known. Seroflo is however the generic version of Advair. Which means it contains the same active ingredients.

What should be done if an individual’s inhaler runs out during an asthma attack?

If the attack is minor then driving to the closest emergency room or a walk in clinic, here they can treat the attack. Generally the emergency room will prescribe an inhaler at that time. Now if the attack is more serious on should call 911. The EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) can administer medicine and send you to the emergency room for further evaluation.

Would it be okay for a child to use proventil inhaler to prevent an asthma attack before physical activity?

If the child only has asthma attacks because of exercise then the inhaler would help. This type of medication helps opening the airways, which can help breathing. Proventil is a type of medication that would only work if taken in advance, it will not be helpful during an asthma attack.

What is a Qvar inhaler used to treat?

A Qvar inhaler has beclometasone also known as corticosteroid. This is can help control symptoms of asthma such as shortness of breath and wheezing. Qvar does not work right away for acute attacks, this should be taken as a preventative. This medication does not relieve asthma attack.
