Hysterosalpingogram Procedure

A Hysterosalpingogram procedure or Hysterosalpingography (HSG) is a medical test that uses radiology to explore the uterine cavity and fallopian tubes. This procedure involves the use of a dye which fills the uterine cavity and fallopian tubes, along with x-ray imaging, to get a better view of internal organs. In some cases, the HSG may actually be able to remove a partial blockage in the fallopian tubes which may increase a woman's chances of becoming pregnant. To learn more about a Hysterosalpingogram procedure and how it works, take a look below at the question that have been answered by the Experts.

Can Chlamydia and Trichomoniasis cause someone to not get pregnant?

These Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) could cause a blockage in a woman's fallopian tubes. However, there is no way to know if the woman's tubes are blocked without doing a Hysterosalpingogram. In many cases, this test may unblock an existing blockage which makes the procedure a worthwhile investment. A majority of women who have an HSG test conceive within 3-6 months of having the test performed.

Typically, a Hysterosalpingogram can cost anywhere from $250 to $500. The cost will fluctuate from state to state and can usually be covered if the patient has insurance.

What can a couple do to increase their chances of getting pregnant?

Generally, the first thing to be checked in a couple who cannot conceive is the quality and quantity of the male's sperm as a low sperm count could be the cause of infertility. Another possible issue could be the woman's thyroid which can be tested with a TSH thyroid blood test.

In some cases, a woman may even have a blockage in the fallopian tubes. A Hysterosalpingogram can then be performed to check for blockages. This test uses dye and x-ray technology to search for scar tissue and other issues in the female reproductive organs. If the Hysterosalpingogram shows that the fallopian tubes are clear and in good condition, other issues to test for ovarian cysts or an elevated prolactin level may be carried out. Typically, most of these problems can be easily corrected.

What is an HSG test and can it tell someone why they can’t get pregnant?

There are several reasons why a hysterosalpingogram (HSG) is done. One of the reasons is to determine if the woman's fallopian tubes are blocked which generally hinders attempts at pregnancy. Infections can cause excessive scarring in the fallopian tubes which could create a blockage. In some cases, the dye used during the hysterosalpingogram may actually clear the blockage in the fallopian tubes which, in turn, can help a woman conceive.

A hysterosalpingogram is also used to search for potential issues in the woman's uterus such as an abnormal shape, injuries, polyps, adhesions, fibroids and more. These issues can sometimes cause repeated miscarriages or very painful periods. Once these problems are diagnosed correctly, they can be treated appropriately.

Is an HSG test considered important when a couple is having difficulty in conceiving and can it cause infections or pain?

While there may be a small chance a woman can get an infection from a hysterosalpingogram, the test may actually increase the woman's chances of becoming pregnant. In other words, many women become pregnant after having the procedure done and very few ever acquire an infection. In some situations, the dye injected during the procedure may cause some women to cramp but the pain is usually mild.

Many couples rely on the findings of a hysterosalpingogram when trying to conceive. This test provides an internal look into the female reproductive organs and can usually detect any possible issues that may hinder attempts at a pregnancy. If you are interested in knowing more about hysterosalpingograms, ask an Expert for medical insights and information about this procedure. They can also offer suggestions on the various methods to overcome infertility based on your case history.
