What is Henoch-Schonlein Purpura

Henoch-Schoenlein Purpura (HSP) is an infection of the small blood vessels that occurs due to an abnormal reaction of the immune system. It is characterized by bruise like rashes of the skin and can also cause stomach and kidney discomfort. This condition most often occurs in small children right as the result of upper respiratory infection and elderly, but it can affect all ages. The severity of HSP may vary due to age, as the symptoms are believed to be less severe in children.

How long does HSP last?

In many patients HSP only lasts for a few days. It has been known to stick around longer in cases where the symptoms are more severe.

What are the causes?

For the most part there is no one thing causing this condition. It occurs when the immune systems react abnormally to infections. Below is a list of things that have been known to trigger this reaction.

  • allergic reaction to certain foods
  • upper respiratory infections
  • medicines like Ampicillin, Chlorpromazine, Penicillin, Quinine, Erythromycin
