What are gallstones?

Gallstones are formed in the gallbladder and are made up of hardened digestive fluids. A gallstone can be as small as a grain of sand or as large as a golf ball. They can also range in quantity.

What are the symptoms a child with gallstones may experience?

It is not uncommon for children to have no signs or symptoms that they have a gallstone. Only when the gallstone lodges in a duct and causes a blockage would symptoms arise. These can include a sudden intensifying pain in the top right of the abdomen or in the center of the abdomen below the breast bone, back pain that occurs between the shoulder blades, and pain in the right shoulder. Symptoms can last a few minutes to a few hours.

Would gallstones cause a child that has mild hereditary spherocytosis to have lower abdominal pain, nausea, and dizziness?

Hereditary spherocytosis would increase a child’s chances of having gallstones. Gallstone pain would not occur in the lower abdomen but instead in the right upper quadrant. This alone does exhibit the classic gallstones signs but perhaps something other such as appendicitis or other cause may exist.

Could a gallstone cause a two-year-old child to have watery diarrhea and back pain?

It is not typical for a two year old child to present with back pain with diarrhea. Liver function tests, pancreatic function tests, and an x-ray of the stomach are recommended. Hepatitis and gallstones can be ruled out via the liver test. Pancreatitis can be caused by gallstones. A sonogram can look at the gallbladder for gallstones and kidney stones as well as the anatomy of the liver and kidneys. For positive diagnosis of causes an examination will need to be performed.

Could a gallstone cause a child to have occasional pain on their right side under the lungs and stools are white?

Pain in this area along with white stools may bring concern around the gallbladder and liver. Both of which are located in the upper right area of the abdomen. Pain in this area can point towards gallbladder disease that can cause white stools. Another possibility is a type of gallbladder inflammation or gallstones causing these symptoms. Hepatitis can also be associated with these symptoms.

If a three-year-old child that has gallstones has chronic constipation and eating very little should the gallbladder be removed?

Typically, it is unusual for a child to have gallstones unless they are suffering from a liver abnormality or blood disorder of some kind. It would be best to try to have the gallstones removed before removing the gallbladder itself. The child’s doctor should be able to determine if it is possible to remove the gallstones surgically. If other issues are occurring, the doctor may find that gallbladder removal is needed.

If an ultrasound ruled out appendicitis, gallbladder issues, and liver problems what would cause upper right abdominal pain in a child for six days?

There are several things that can cause this symptom such as mesenteric adenitis which can mimic the symptoms of appendicitis, musculoskeletal pain, or cyst in the ovary (although rare in a child that has not started her menstrual cycle yet). Gallstones can also cause this type of pain and don’t show up to well on an ultrasound. A Hida scan may be needed, which checks the gallbladder function.
