Pontiac Fiero GT Problems and Troubleshooting

The gorgeously stylish and sporty Pontiac Fiero GT is a mid-sized sports car that was produced from 1984 to 1988 by General Motors’ Pontiac division. The Fiero was launched as a two-seater sports car and was fitted with a V6 engine. The 1988 model is widely sought after by collectors due to its limited production. If you need assistance in replacing Pontiac Fiero parts you should contact professionals. Read below where Experts have answered questions on Pontiac Fiero engine issues.

Why is my 1987 Pontiac Fiero GT stalling and stopping?

In most cases this happens if you don’t have an injector pulse. The injector pulse is the signal from the computer to the injectors to allow them to open up and send fuel to the cylinders. The most common reason for the no injector pulse is bad or shorted fuel injectors. They short out and pull the signal from the computer down which causes the no injector pulse condition.

To determine what is causing this issue you need to test the injectors with an ohmmeter as they are wired in bank 1 and bank 2. There are only two injector drivers in the computer and each fires one bank. You can disconnect the connector going to the fuel injectors and check each bank with the ohmmeter. Each bank should have equal resistance, over 4 ohms, per branch, testing from pin A to B and C to D. If you remove the intake, each injector should produce 12 ohms.

Why is my 1988 Pontiac Fiero GT’s engine stalling and why is the idle slow?

In most cases this happens if there is a vacuum leak or if the idle motor is dirty or defective. You should take the idle motor off and clean it with a carb cleaner. After this disconnect the battery for 20 minutes and touch the two cable ends together for a few seconds. Reconnect the battery and start the car immediately. Allow it to run for 20 minutes and focus more drive at idle. This will re-learn the IAC motor.

What is causing my 1988 Pontiac Fiero GT engine to overheat?

You should start by checking the cooling system for exhaust gases. If there are exhaust gases present in the cooling system it will create more pressure and will cause the engine to burn coolant and heat the coolant up faster. The presence of exhaust gases in the coolant system will result in engine problems like a head gasket or head. You need to make sure that the system is full and the coolant is circulating, the cooling fans are working as well as the pressure cap holding the pressure.

Why are the flashers and new LED lights in the turn signals not working in my 1988 Pontiac Fiero GT?

The signal light flasher needs to have a predetermined amount of electrical current flow in order to operate the flasher internal circuit. If the current flow is very low it will not work. LED lights draw relatively less current and if your newly installed LED lights are not drawing a sufficient amount of current it indicates that there could be some failure with the bulbs. You should try installing original bulbs and check to see if they will work.

Drawing an auto-checklist and religiously following it will keep your Pontiac Fiero GT on the road longer. Learning how to troubleshoot catalytic converters, an overheating engine, and other issues will save you big bucks. For easy troubleshooting and maintenance tips you should speak to an Expert.
