What can be done when the rear door handle of a Mitsubishi Pajero GLX becomes loose and the door will not unlock?

Case Details: The inside release also does not work.

Normally, when the door handle is faulty and the door will not open, the inner release still works. If the door cannot be opened from either the outside or inside, the likelihood is that the lock solenoid or actuator has failed. A temporary solution may be possible by thumping the latch area of the door with one hand while pulling on the door handle with the other. Operating the power locks may also help, depending on the nature of the problem. Since the interior panels cannot be removed safely to access the locking mechanism with the door closed, this is the best thing to try. With the door open the inner panel can be removed to look for the fault.

What is the procedure for replacing the broken outer door handle on a 1992 Mitsubishi RVR?

Case Details: The vehicle has a slider door. With the panel removed, only one bolt is visible holding the door handle in place and removing it has not released the handle.

Look closely at the vertical door handle on the inner side of the door. At the top there will be a sectioned area somewhat like a cap. This should be pried off to reveal a hidden screw for the door handle. This should be removed. Repeat the process for the cap at the bottom of the handle. The outer door handle should now be free.

What is causing the outer door handles of a 1998 Mitsubishi Eclipse to not work?

Case Details: The doors open fine from the inside but when the outside door handles are used, the doors often stick.

It is likely that the latches and/or the actuators have failed. These are complex mechanisms made up of arms and pivots and with age they can often seize up. If the vehicle is in a coastal or other high humidity area, rusting can exacerbate the problem. To confirm this, open a door and use a screwdriver, pencil, or other long slim object to push the latch closed in the door. Use the screwdriver as if it is a striker on the car body to engage the latches all the way. Now, without closing the door, try the door handle. It should work and open the latch. To see if the problem is with the latch or actuator, the inner trim panel of the door will need to be removed. With the panel off the door handle should be pulled and if the rod attached to the outer door handle (the actuator) moves, then the latch issue is confirmed. If the rod does not move the actuator will have to be checked. Door handle malfunction can occur, but it is rare. The signs of this are either physical damage to the handle or reduced tension or stroke length.

How can the back door of a 2003 Mitsubishi Montero be opened when the key and auto door release do not work?

Unlike most vehicles, the door handle of the Montero is not connected to the latch by a rod. Instead the handle has a relay spring connecting it to the latch. If the relay spring becomes corroded and seizes, the handle will not spring back and the latch will not be released. In such cases opening the rear door is a slow time consuming process. Ensure the door is unlocked. Penetrating oil will need to be sprayed in through the door handle. This can be done by running a straw through the gaps around the handle. After lubricating the area completely use a screwdriver to work the door handle in and out repeatedly to loosen the system. This can take a long time, often up to 45 minutes or more. In time, the spring will start to loosen and the handle will work to open the door. Once the door is open remove the interior trim panels. The relay spring will be visible. This should be either replaced or thoroughly cleaned and lubricated. Replacement is normally the better option.

Is a dealer right in charging an extra $30 for a Mitsubishi Montero door handle on the grounds that it is not in stock?

Case Details: The dealer says an inventory transfer will have to be done from another dealership and the shipment cost is to be paid by the customer.

Part like door handles are often not easily available and inventory transfers in such cases are common. However, the transfer in an internal matter and the shipping costs are paid by Mitsubishi and not either of the dealers who are involved. As such, there is no apparent reason for any extra charge to be levied on the purchaser.

What is the procedure for replacing the rear side outer door handle on a 2002 Mitsubishi Montero Utility?

This is the procedure for door handle replacement:

  • Remove the door pull and armrest on the inside of the door. Screws will now be visible, remove them.
  • Check the perimeter of the door trim for any screws that need to be removed.
  • Remove the inside door handle bezel.
  • Now insert a prying tool into the bottom of the door and carefully and slowly pry the trim panel loose. While doing this any plastic snap in fasteners will pop loose.
  • Pull the panel away and unplug the light and window switch.
  • Now slide the panel up and away from the door.
  • Pull the plastic sheeting away from the door.
  • Reconnect the window switch and drop the window down to a position where the bolts holding the glass to the regulator can be removed.
  • Slide the window up partially out of the door to allow for access to the outer door handle bolts.
  • Pop the plastic clip holding the door latch rod to the door handle.
  • Remove the two bolts holding the door handle to the frame and the handle can be removed.
  • Install the new door handle by reversing this procedure.
