ADSL Modem Router
You will receive a free router when you sign up for a broadband deal from your internet service provider (ISP). Free models can be pretty basic, and although they do a good job, you will often get better speeds and improved performance by upgrading. A modem is used to connect to the internet, and the router transmits the data. Most newer routers now incorporate a modem. Although a modem router saves space, sometimes it is a good idea to purchase a standalone router for more flexibility. You will be able to use it with a broadband connection from any ISP and continue to use it after switching providers.
When browsing routers, you will find both single and dual band routers. Single band operates on one wireless frequency, while dual band suffers less interference and offer faster speeds. - Phone Socket Corrosion: This is among the most difficult faults to troubleshoot because of the varying performance it gives. One minute it can five a better quality transmission and the next, a lower one. This is most common among the coastal states. Newer phone point sockets have a better resistance against corrosion.
- Old and Worn Phone Point: The problem with older systems is that they are not suitable for high-speed transmissions. Newer systems are made from much better materials and will provide a stable performance without any issues. When your licensed telephone technician is doing your installation, request either for a complete phone line replacement or replace each socket. There is a possibility doing so will bump up your ADSL speed.
- Faulty Telephone Wiring: The cables connecting your phone line and ADSL will need to be up-to-date with the technologies that are being used to transmit data. It is recommended to have a licensed technician replace the cables if it is needed.
- Faulty ISP Cable: When the bundle of cabling is broken and a cable touches the earth, you will most likely experience disturbances on the phone line. Moisture may seep into the ISP cable, causing the available speed to develop insufficiencies.
- Loose Fly Lead and ADSL Filters: The filter connection may be loose and lead to a drop in availability of your transmission. You may find a disruption in the ADSL line when a call comes in. To correct this, all sockets will have to be inspected.
ADSL VS SDSL
When you connect to the internet through a wireless network, you are probably connecting to a digital subscriber line (DSL). ADSL is the most common type of DSL connection used residentially because it offers download speeds many times higher than upload speeds. SDSL is a more expensive type of DSL that has upload speeds close to the same as download. This type of connection is most common for business and server applications where upload speed is important.
Upgrading Network Connection
ADSL2 and ADSL2+ are enhancements to ADSL that provide higher speeds. The main difference between the two is ADSL2+ uses twice as much bandwidth along copper wires as ADSL2 does. To upgrade to the higher speeds of connection, you do not need to change the equipment. ADSL2+ is usually preferred for short distances and ADSL2 for longer distances.
