I have what I think is a simple question. I own a business
I have what I think is a simple question. I own a business that did not take in any money in 2017 or 2018, but has a very small income for 2019. I started the business in California in November of 2017 as an LLC. I am the sole member. I paid the 800 franchise tax fee, however my personal taxes were filed through my father as his dependant (I am a student and just starting up). I just recieved a notice stating that they recieved the 800 but don't have the necessary documents to accompany it. What do I need to send them? I assume I'll need to do the same next year for 2018 as well. … read more

I have a retirement income question. 5 years ago I retired
5 years ago I retired and moved to New York. I receive two retirement checks, one from the San Francisco Fire Department and one from California Public Employees Retirement system. So I had the retirement agencies stop withholding CA tax. I researched the issue and found that the 1995, Public Law 104-95 made it illegal for states to tax retirement income of individuals no longer residing in their state. Now my tax preparer says I owe tax for NY and for CA. She says it is a part of her tax program and it asks for an accounting of any "income earned as a non-resident derived from California?" When she puts our earned amount in that box she says the program says we owe CA $1,800, yet we are paying NY a similar amount. Can CA tax my retirement income even though I don't live there? … read more
