IRS Notice CP71C. 2005 and 2006. My mother-in-law received
My mother-in-law received two copies of IRS Notice CP71C, dated June 8, 2020, as follows:1. Tax year: 2005 Amount due: $56,072.262. Tax year: 2006 Amount due: $717.79The notice contained the following two sentences:“If we notified you that we suspended enforced collection on your account because it would create a financial hardship (menaing you would be unable to pay basic reasonable living expenses if we levied) and your financial situation has not changed, you don't need to do anything.”“If you don't pay the amount due or call us to make payment arrangements, we will continue to send you annual reminder notices of your balance due until the statute of limitations for collection expires.”My mother-in-law has no assets. Social security is her only income, in the amount of $400/month. She also receives food stamps.Questions:1. How can we get the IRS to suspend enforced collection? How can we find out if they have already done so?2. If they suspend enforced collection, does that suspend the statute of limitations for collection?3. How can we find out the reason for the tax debt?4. How can we find out when the statute of limitations for collection started, and when it will expire?5. If she has no assets and cannot pay, what actions can the IRS take against her?6. How can we find out if the IRS has filed a Notice of Federal Tax Lien (NFTL)? Can they file that lien if she has no assets?7. When the statute of limitations for collection expires, does a Federal Tax Lien also expire?8. What should she do, in light of the information above?… read more
